Colorblocking - Part II

(English)

Was magst Du besonders bzw.

-----------------------------

And here is - as promised in my last post - the matching top for my colorblocking skirt:

For the pattern i've used Burda 08-2011-120 and made some changes. I've choosen this pattern due to its simplicity. And here is my preliminary patternreview:

Pattern Description:
A simple boxy shaped jacket.

Pattern Sizing:
Petite sizes 17-21. I've made a size 18.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
I would say .... no .... due to my changes.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
I don't know. It is such a simple pattern that i didn't looked into the instructions.

What did you particularly like  or dislike about the pattern?
I've choosen this pattern for this project due to its simplicity. The pattern doesn't have any seams or darts which would make the seam matching or colorblocking difficult.

Fabric Used:
Ponte di Roma knit in black, white and orange. Again the black and the orange fabric are leftovers from two of my previous projects (black dress and orange dress).

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
I didn't made any fitting changes. For the design i've only changed the obvious by dividing the pattern pieces due to my color scheme.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Ummmhhhh ...... i don't know. I think it depends on the final fitting.

Conclusion:
I like the final result. I think the top is a nice eyecatcher and something different from my usual tops. But i have to admit that i would probably not wear skirt and top both together ... i think that would be too much for my taste.

Colorblocking - Part I

(English)

Was magst Du besonders bzw.

----------------------------------------

After my latest sewing quickies i wanted to sew something more elaborate. And thus, my latest project took shape. It was inspired by the spring 2012 RTW fashion shows. And this is my source of inspiration:

All images courtesy of Style.com

Inspired by these pictures i've made an outfit consisting of a skirt and a top (i will show you the top in a separate post). For the skirt i've used Burda 09-2010-116. And it looks like this on the hanger:

And this is my preliminary patternreview:

Pattern Description:
Pencil skirt with horizontal curved seams.

Pattern Sizing:
36-44. I've made a size 36.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, except my changed color scheme.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
As always .... i don't know. I didn't need them.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I love the design lines of this pattern. Actually, i liked the pattern since it came out. No clue what took me so long to finally make it .....

Fabric Used:
Ponte di Roma knit in black, white and orange. The black and the orange fabrics are leftovers from two of my other projects (black dress and orange dress).

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
I've made the skirt unlined and omitted the zipper since my skirt is made in a knit. Otherwise, i didn't make any changes.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
With reservation until the final fitting: Yes and yes. Maybe i will sew the dress version of this pattern .....

Conclusion:
For some reasons, this outfit reminds me of a uniform of a flight attendant from the 70ies. But maybe that's due to my color scheme. However, i like my new skirt and hope that it fits!

Stepptanz

(English)

Was magst Du besonders bzw. überhaupt nicht an dem Schnittmuster?
Ich mag die Wickeloptik und die Blenden.

Verwendeter Stoff:

----------------------------------------

Today, i'm showing you an UFO which has to wait for its final touches. Why this became an UFO you may ask? Because during sewing it i ran out of thread ... not only once, but twice. And to be honest .... walking (by food) into the city with my huge belly seems to be an insuperable barrier these days *lol*

So, UFO of the day is Burda 09-2011-110. A simple wrap mini skirt. I wanted to topstitch the facings. And that was the problem. I had some topstitching thread in the right color in my stash and started. After a few lines of topstitching, i ran out of thread. Nicely, my dear husband went into the department store during his lunch break and bought another spool of topstitching thread. But - near the finishing line - i ran out of topstitching thread again. So, there are about 1.5 lines of topstitching on the waistband missing. However ... it has to wait and you can see the current status of the skirt right now ......

So what's left to do? I have to topstitch the waistband and sew on the buttons. The latter has to wait until i can try the skirt on in order to better adjust the button position. Nonetheless, here is my preliminary patternreview .....

Pattern Description:
Mini wrap skirt with facings.

Pattern Sizing:
34-42. I've made a size 36.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
The pattern consists of one piece for the skirt plus two pieces for the waistband and another two pieces for the facings. That's all. So, it's more than easy. That's why i didn't look into the instructions and just started sewing.

What did you particularly like  or dislike about the pattern?
I like that it is wrap skirt and also like the facings.

Fabric Used:
about 1m of Ponte di Roma knit. The fabric's fibre content is mainly Polyester and it feels like the fabric for these Adidas-Tracksuits, only more stable.

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
None.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
With reservation until the final fitting: Yes and yes. I can picture this skirt in many variations: In a bright color with contrasting facings (red and purple?) or in black wool with black leather facings ......

Conclusion:
It's a quick and easy project ...... except you make it harder then neccessary on your own :-) The pattern is simple but can be used in so many ways. I think i will wear my version a lot, because it's very versatile due to its simplicity.

Ich geb' meinen Senf dazu ......

Hallo, meine lieben Leser!

Hello, my dear readers! Even though i wasn't posting the last days i was a prolific sewer. Amongst other things, i've made this cardigan:

The pattern is self-drafted and is loosely based on Burda 12-2009-119. I've re-rdafted the front piece and constructed a collar. Furthermore, i've shortened the jacket a little bit and made the belt a little wider. That's all i've changed.

The fabric is a mustard or curry yellow knit fabric. It wasn't as hard to work with this fabric as i've thought it would, not too much fraying and fringing. In order to secure all seams properly, i've used the overlock stitch of my sewing machine and made all hems with my twin needle.

I really don't know what else to say about it. It was a quick and easy project for inbetween and was done in a few hours. I'm also happy with the result. Maybe it's not the most spectacular garment i've ever made, but it's wonderful comfortable and cozy and works well with pants and over dresses or skirts.

And with some more pictures, i say goodbye for now..
Best wishes, Sena

Pretty in Pink

By now, i came to the conclusion that this top here is terrible due to a wrong fabric choice. But i wanted to give the pattern a second chance and made it again. Et voila ..... i like this second version so much better:

I have to admit that the color is bright and you need to get used to it (It's a hot but warm pink). But it works well with my basic wardrobe colors (black, dark brown and lightgray). And a little pop of color improves your mood on a cold and dark winter day.

Unfortunately, i didn't had enough fabric left for the longsleeved version and made 3/4 sleeves instead. But that's okay for me. I will actually wear it with a cardigan so there is no need for long sleeves. I think this will be a nice addition to my closet.

And that's for today.

Best wishes, Sena

Ich mache blau .....

(English)

Was magst Du besonders bzw.

--------------------------------------------

As mentioned in my last post, my need for dresses is more than satisfied after my dress parade. Now, i'm sewing separates. And today i start with a new royal blue top. The pattern is McCalls 6319 ... which is actually a dress pattern. However, i've turned it into a top and addes long sleeves. Here are pictures and a preliminary patternreview:

Unfortunately, none of the taken pictures really shows the top very well. But i will show you pictures of me wearing the top somewhen later. And i hope these pictures will be better .....

Pattern Description:
Fitted dress with tapered skirt has lined bodice and elasticized waist and three different neckline variations.

Pattern Sizing:
8 - 10 - 12 - 14. I've made a size 8.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes and no. Due to my changes, i would say that the garment doesn't look like on the photo. But i think the special detail about the dress is the neckline which looks like on the photo.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
I have no clue. As always i didn't looked at them.
What did you particularly like  or dislike about the pattern?
I've bought the pattern because of the interesting neckline. I think it's a nice design detail on an otherwise simple pattern.

Fabric Used:
about am of royalblue cotton jersey.

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
First of all, i've turned the pattern into a top. Therefore, i've lengthened the upper front piece and the upper back piece (It seems that i've made both pieces a little too short for my taste. But that will the final fitting show ..... ). Furthermore, i've added long sleeves. And finally, i've made this top unlined. Instead of the lining i've drafted a piece for the front and back neckline facing and sewed them onto the top

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
The answers to these two questions have to wait until the final fitting. If i like the top on me, i would maybe sew it again as a dress and would also recommend it to others.

Conclusion:
This was really i quick project. Even though i'm on the slow side when it comes to sewing i was able to finish it in acouple of hours. It was an easy and fast sewing project. But the neckline details makes it look elaborate. I think, due to its color it's a good addition to the army of gray garments in my closet .....

Knöpfe .....

Hallo meine lieben Leser!

Hello, my dear readers! As mentioned before, i needed buttons for my black wrap dress. I found some in the online shop Knopf-Truhe and bought these golden metall buttons:

I really love the bow on it .... it somehow reminds me of Milly or Juicy Couture ..... thus, i directly ordered them. And because there is a minimum order value in this shop, after some browsing i've decided on these kids buttons:

Aren't they just the cutest buttons ever? Until now, i've never planned to sew for our little girl. But there are just so many beautiful fabrics, buttons and trims for kids that really tempt me. However, i can use these buttons only later. Because they could get off the clothes and she could put them into her mouth and choke. However, seeing all these beautiful things make me overthink my attitude towards kids sewing ;-)

But until then, we will continue here with the usual. And after my dress parade (dress 1, dress 2, dress 3, dress 4 and dress 5) i don't need any more dresses. Thus, i plan to make some separates as tops and skirts (if there is time for that *lol*). But more on that later .....

Best wishes, Sena

Butterick 5674

(English)

Ja.

Was magst Du besonders bzw.

Verwendeter Stoff:
1,8m Romanit-Jersey in lila/fuchsia.

---------------------------------------------------

My dear readers, in quick succession i can report you from my work on my latest dress: Butterick 5674.

Unfortunately, i have some problems with edema of the arms and hands. I.e. my arms and fingers feel a little numb. That's not really serious or doesn't hurt, but it makes hand-sewing nearly impossible. Thus my current dress has to wait for its finishing after my pregnancy. Nonetheless, i want to show you how it looks right now and post a preliminary patternreview ....

This is how it looks so far ....... I still have to sewn in the invisible zipper in the center back (previously i will try if a zipper is neccessary in this knit dress) and then there is only hand-sewing left like hemming the sleeves, etc. But i think you get an impression of how the dress will look like .....

Pattern Description:
Close-fitting,lined dress has front overlay, shoulder and waist pleats and back invisible zipper.

Pattern Sizing:
6 - 8 - 10 - 12. Usually, i sew a size 6 in Big 4-patterns. But this time i was insecure. Thus, i've made it in size 8. I thought, this style would look better a little too big than too small because the draping will look better when losely fitted. When i look at it now (on the hanger) i think i've made the right decision regarding the sizing ......

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, nearly. Except that i've made it mirror-inverted. But apart from that it looks like the envelope photo - especially since i've choosen a similar color.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes.

What did you particularly like  or dislike about the pattern?
I like all the draping - on the upper as well as on the lower front.

Fabric Used:
1,8m Ponte knit in a deep and warm purple. My fabric is middleweight. At some seams as for example between upper and lower front you have to sew through a lot of fabric layers. Thus, there i've cut back the darts to reduce thickness and bulk. I think maybe a lightweight jersey would be better suitable for this pattern.

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
None by intention. As mentioned before, i've just made the dress mirror-inverted.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I think the design of this dress is very uniquie and thus, you don't need two of these dresses in your closet. If i would recommend it to others? I think i will wait with a definite recommendation until i have finished the dress and tried it on. But i think on the hanger it looks great so far.

Conclusion:
When i've received the pattern i was quiet surprised that it is rated "easy". But even though it looks complicated and complex, it went together quickly and without any problems. So far, i'm more then happy with the result and can't wait until its completion!

A detailed picture of the upper front  .....

.... the lower front  .....

..... and of the hand-sewn seam.
