I can't believe that it's already so late in the year and that another month flew by so quickly ..... So let's get into media res ... and start with the first topic of the December issue of BWOF: Nachtschwärmer


Modell 106:
Das Kleid gefällt mir richtig gut. Mir ist zwar immer schleierhaft, warum die liebe Burdaredaktion glaubt, alle Welt sitze in klitzekleinen Fitzelchen Stoff und aufgerüscht bis zum geht nicht mehr unterm Weihnachtsbaum .... aber für den Sommer finde ich das Kleid toll.

I really like this dress. But i really don't understand why the editorial staff at BWOF believes everyone dresses up in tiny tiny chiffon dresses for Christmas .... but the dress is great. Maybe something for the summer.


Modell 107:
Ich finde das Revers super, die Schulterpatten würde ich allerdings weglassen .... als Weste könnte ich es mir sogar noch besser vorstellen ....

I like the lapels, it's very stylish. But i would omit the epaulettes ... i think it would be even better as a vest ...


Modell 102:
Ja, ich weiß, Geschmäcker sind verschieden .... diesem ganzen Ein-Schulter-Ding kann ich sowieso nix abgewinnen ... und dann dieser schräge Saum und dann auch noch aus Chiffon ... das sieht aus wie ein Fähnchen im Winde .... also, neee ... das geht ja mal gar nicht ....

I know, it's all a matter of taste ... but i'm not so much into this one-shoulder-thing .... and this asymmetric seam ... and made in chiffon .... this looks so cheap ..... something i really don't like .....


Modell 108:
Liebe Burdaredaktion, was für ein Joan-Collins-Gedächtnis-Jäckchen ist denn bitte das? Würde irgendwer in der Redaktion in so etwas in nüchternem Zustand und bei Tageslicht auf die Strasse gehen und sich darin auch noch gut fühlen?

Dear Burda, what kind of Joan-Collins commemoration-jacket is this? Is there anybody in your staff who would wear it in a non-alcoholized state ... at daylight ... in public ... and feeling comfortable?

Okay, kommen wir zu dem nächsten Thema: Cocooning

Modell 102:
Den Mantel finde ich spitze ... allerdings nicht in der Länge ... das würde mich mit meinen knapp 1,5m Körpergröße wie einen Zwerg wirken lassen, aber in einer anderen Länge durchaus vorstellbar. Stehkragen und Schnitt gefallen mir sehr gut ... allerdings zweifel ich immer an der Prakikabilität von 3/4 Ärmeln.

This coat looks great ... i would sew it in a different length ... with my size i would look like a dwarf. I like the lines and the collar ... but i'm not sure about the 3/4 sleeves ... i don't know if this is working here in german winter time.


Modell 119:
Dieses Modell hat es auf meine imaginäre To-Sew-Liste geschafft. Die Wickeljacke sieht total kuschelig und gemütlich aus und passt bestimmt super zu Kleidchen und Stiefeln oder einfach nur zur Jeans. Da werde ich wohl mal einen auf Lieschen Müller machen ... denn auch der Stoff gefällt mir genau in der Farbe.

This one made it to my imaginary to-sew-list. This wrap-jacket looks comfy and cosy und will look great with a dress and boots as well as with jeans or pants. I like it in this color and in this fabric.

Nachdem wir uns zu Hause also eingepuppt haben, geht es Ab nach draußen:

Modell 110 bzw. 111:
Die Jacke finde ich ganz gut. Die könnte ich mir gut aus Sweatshirt-Fleece vorstellen.

I can imagine this jacket in a warm and comfy sweatshirt fleece.

Modell 134:
Ohne zu viel vorwegnehmen zu wollen: Ein kuscheliger Kapuzenpulli für meinen Liebsten steht momentan ganz oben auf meiner To-Sew-Liste. Da kommt dieser Schnitt also genau zum rechten Zeitpunkt!

Without giving away too much: Next on my list is a hoodie for my DH. So this pattern is right in time!

Das nächste Thema verspricht einen Glanzvollen Auftritt ... für mich ist jedoch nichts dabei.

The next topic are clothes to celebrate Christmas ... nothing that i like.

In der Rubrik Aus 1 mach 4 dreht es sich dieses Mal um Capes. Zum einen denke ich bei Capes immer an frierende Unterarme, auch wenn ich Capes eigentlich immer ganz chic finde. Zum anderen fide ich, gab es schon bessere Schnitte in älteren Heften. Hier also auch nichts für mich.

The next in the list is Aus 1 mach 4. This time it's about capes. On the hand hand i always fear cold arms, when i think about capes. Even thoug i really think they're tres chic. On the other hand there have been cape patterns in back issues that i liked more. Again, nothing that appeals to me.

Fazit:
Ein definitives "Ja, das näh ich" und vier "Vielleicht, mal sehen" und ein "Ganz nett, aber nichts für mich"..... Das ist keine überragende Ausbeute, aber auch nicht schlecht ....

Conclusion:
One "Yes, i will sew that" and four "maybe, let's see" and one "nice, but it's not working for me" ... that's not too bad ....

Chocolate Coat - Part II

Inzwischen habe ich auch erste erkennbare Fortschritte an meinem Mantel gemacht - aber mühsam ernährt sich das Eichhörnchen. Damit es für Euch hier aber nicht langweilig wird, schon mal ein paar Bilder:

Bekanntermaßen wohne ich ja in der tiefsten Provinz .... und da ist man manchmal von der Versorgungskette abgeschnitten ;-) Ich habe einfach kein Zierstichgarn in der passenden Farbe bekommen. Ich hatte also die Wahl zwischen einer nicht passenden Farbe (zu hellem braun oder schwarz) oder normalem Nähgarn (allerdings in der richtigen Farbe) für die Absteppungen. Ich hab mich dann für das normale Nähgarn entschieden und einfach die Fadenspannung ein wenig heruntergesetzt. Das Ergebnis kann sich wirklich sehen lassen. Leider konnte ich das auf den Fotos aber nicht so richtig einfangen.

Der Kragen muss noch zugeschnitten werden, mit Vlieseline verstärkt, zusammengesetzt und an die Jacke angenäht werden. Dann geht es an das Nähen des Futters und zu guter Letzt an das Zusammennähen von Mantel und Futter. Also noch einiges zu tun. Ihr wisst also, wo ihr mich heute findet ;-)

As I mentioned before, i live in provincial backwater ... and this is why i'm sometimes cut off from the supply chain ;-) I couldn't find threat for the topstitching in the right color. So I had the choice between topstitching thread in a wrong color (a lighter brown or black) or normal thread but in the right color. I've choosen normal thread and set down the thread tension. The result really looks good.

So what's left to do: Cut, interface and sew the collar. Sew the lining and sew lining and coat together. A lot to do, so i'm off for sewing!

SWAP 2009: Burdastyle Bella

(English)

Beschreibung:
Hose mit hohem Bund und weit-geschnittenen Beinen.

Größen:
34-46. Laut Burdastyle-Tabelle bin ich eine Größe 40, Kaufgröße ist bei mir aber 34. Da ich nicht an falscher Stelle eitel sein wollte, habe ich mich für Größe 38 entschieden. Vieeeel zu groß.

Sieht das genähte Kleidungsstück wie auf dem Foto bzw. wie die technische Zeichung aus?
Abgesehen von den Änderungen, ja.

War die Anleitung leicht zu verstehen?
Hmmmhhh ... ich habe nicht einmal hineingeschaut, daher kann ich dazu nichts sagen.

Was magst Du besonder bzw. überhaupt nicht an dem Schnittmuster?
Ich mag den Stil der Hose ... weites Bein, hoher Bund, ein bißchen Retro und auf jeden Fall mal ein außergewöhnlicher Hosenschnitt. Was ich gar nicht mag, ist die Paßform - schrecklich. Dass der hohe Bund Anpassungen bedarf, war mir von Anfang an klar. Daher habe ich auch ein Probemodell genäht (was ich sonst nie tue). Aber die Hose sitzt auch sonst einfach nicht besonders :-(

Verwendeter Stoff:
1,5m fester Jeansstoff ohne Stretch.

Änderungen an dem Schnittmuster oder am Design:

• Ich habe das Design der Taschen vorne geändert, da mir die irgendwie zu groß waren und nicht besonders gefielen.
  
• Auch die Taschen hinten habe ich verändert. Sorry Burdastyle, aber die Linineführung finde ich irgendwie unglücklich.
• An den Beinen habe ich etwa 6cm an Weite herausgenommen (wie gesagt, die Größentabelle sieht anscheinend sehr viel Bewegungsfreiheit vor) und auch sonst habe ich viel an der Paßform herumgebastelt.
• Ebenso habe ich am Bund entsprechend der Änderungen einiges an Weite herausgenommen.
• Beim Bund habe ich dann auch noch etwa 3cm Höhe herausgenommen und den Verlauf des Bundes vorne verändert.
  

Würdest du das Schnittmuster nochmals nähen? Würdest Du es anderen empfehlen?
Neeein *kreisch* Im Leben nicht noch einmal. Diese Hose hat mich sogar so weit gebracht, dass ich davon Abstand nehme, überhaupt noch einmal eine Hose nähen zu wollen. Wer sich davon nicht abschrecken lässt: Unbedingt ein Probemodell nähen!

Fazit:
Das Endergebnis sieht gar nicht mal so schlecht aus. Der Weg dahin war aber hart und voller Hindernisse! Nein, das muss ich nicht noch einmal haben!







Sorry für die schlechte Qualität der Fotos. Ich habe sie mit Selbstauslöser und Blitz aufgenommen und hinterher aufgehellt, damit man überhaupt etwas sieht.









Pattern Description:
The high-waisted Bella pants are a good fit for many sizes. Due to the wider shape of the pant leg, they are easy on the curves and incredibly comfortable to wear. If you don't like the pleats on either side, just sew them closed or remove them from of the pattern (text from Burdastyle.com)

Pattern Sizing:
34-46. Due to the size chart i'm a size 40, but usually i wear a size 34. But i didn't want to be vain und made a size 38. Waaay too big.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Except the design changes i've made - yes.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Ummhmhh .... to be honest ... i didn't had a look at the instructions, so i can't say anything about it.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I liked the style of it .... wide legs, high waistband, a slight retro touch and very fashionable. But the fitting was horrible. I knew right from the beginning that the high waistband needs a lot of fitting. That's why i've made a muslin (which i usually don't do). But in total the pants just don't fit well :-(

Fabric Used:
1,5m heavyweight denim fabric without stretch.

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:

• I've changed the design of the front pockets. The original pockets were too big for my taste.
• I've also chagedn the design of the back pockets. Sorry Burdastyle but i think the lines were disadvantageous.
• I've took out about 6cm width from each leg (as i said before, they've had a lot of ease included) and made a lot of fitting changes.
• I've also took out some width at the waistband.
  
• I've also shortened the waistband about 3cm and changed the line in the front.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Noooo *eeek* Never ever again. It made me think if i will ever sew pants again. But if you are more experienced and i didn't frightened you enough: Please make a muslin first!

Conclusion:
I really like the result. But the way was long and stumbling. No, i don't need that again!

Chocolate Coat - Part I

Eigentlich hatte ich mir vorgenommen, direkt Freitag nach der Arbeit mit dem Mantel zu beginnen .... aber die Woche war so anstrengend und ich so müde, dass ich mich wie erschlagen auf die Couch habe fallen und vom Fernseher berieseln lassen. Nach einem Erschöpfungsschlaf von 13 Stunden und einem ausgiebigen Frühstück am nächsten morgen konnte es dann endlich losgehen.

Actually, i've planned to start my coat direct after work on friday ... but the last week was so busy and i so exhausted such that i only made it to the couch and watched TV the whole evening. After 13 hours of urgently needed sleep and an extensive breakfast, i was ready to start the coat.

Ich habe nun doch keinen Schnitt komplett selber konstruiert, sondern Vogue 8307 abgeändert. Der Schnitt ist kopiert, alle Änderungen vorgenommen, der Stoff ist zugeschnitten und mit Vlieseline verstärkt. Heute geht es also mit der Näherei los. So, ich bin dann mal weg ... meine Nähmaschine ruft!

I didn't draft the pattern on my own but changed Vogue 8307. The pattern is traced, the pattern pieces copied, all changes are done, the fabric is cut and i've also managed to apply all the interfacing. Now i'm ready to sew .... so that's why i'm gone for today .... my sewing machine is calling me!

Chocolate Coat

Hier in Deutschland steht der Winter vor der Tür. Zeit also, sich zu rüsten und die Garderobe winterfest zu machen. Also steht als nächstes ein Wintermantel an. Den Schnitt werde ich selber konstruieren (ui ui ui, ob das wohl gut geht!?) und den folgenden Stoff habe ich dazu auserkoren:

Winter is coming, at least here in Germany. Time to get ready for cold weather. Therefore, my next project is a winter coat. I will draft the pattern on my own (please keep your fingers crossed, that i wouldn't screw it) and i will use the following fabric:


Der Stoff stammt aus dem Fabrikverkauf von Hugo Boss in Metzingen und ist ein wunderbar schwerer und warmer Wollstoff. Der Stoff ist dunkelbraun wie Zartbitter-Schokolade und hat diagonal zum Fadenlauf gewebte Streifen. Die Oberfläche hat einen leichten Glanz, was den Stoff sehr edel aussehen lässt. Die wunderschönen Perlmutt-Knöpfe stammen ebenfalls aus Metzingen. Sie sind auf dem Foto durch den Blitz viel heller als im Original .... dennoch bin ich unsicher, ob ich nicht doch besser andere Knöpfe wählen sollte (diese Entscheidung hat aber zum Glück noch Zeit). Am Wochenende geht es los! Juhuu!

I've bought this fabric at the Hugo Boss outlet last year. It's a wonderful heavy and warm wool. The color is brown as dark chocolate. It' has diagonal woven stripes and the texture has a slight shine. It really looks very classy and precious. I've also bought the beautiful mother of pearl buttons there. They look brighter on the picture then they're in real ...... i think it's due to the flash of the camera ... though i'm still not sure if i will use them for this coat or not (luckily, i don't have to make this decision yet). I will start it this weekend! Yeah!

Stoffkauf / Fabric Shopping

Ich weiß, ich schulde Euch noch Bilder von der fertiggenähten Burdastyle-Bella und dem letzten Teil des SWAPS. Aber ich bin noch nicht dazu gekommen, Fotos zu machen .... Wenn ich abends nach Hause komme, ist es schon dunkel draussen und die Bilder werden dann meist verschwommen und unscharf .... das muss also bis zum Wochenende warten. Heute möchte ich Euch an meinen neuesten Errungenschaften teilhaben lassen. Ich habe ein paar feine Stöffchen auf Ebay erstanden. Laut Aussagen des Verkäufers sind die Stoffe aus dem Hause Gucci. Das kann ich natürlich nicht nachprüfen, aber ich habe eine Brennprobe gemacht und die Stoffe sind aus 100% Seide und der Preis was mehr als fair. Also ich bin zufrieden - Gucci oder nicht :-)

I know i owe you pictures of my finished Burdastyle Bella and the last SWAP item. But i didn't take pictures yet ... it's always dark when i come home and the pictures turn out to be blurry ..... so this has to wait until the weekend. But today i want to show you my latest fabric founds. I bought some fabrics on ebay. The seller says they're from Gucci. I don't know if this is true, but i made a burn test and it's 100% silk and the price was very good. So that's sufficient for me - Gucci or not :-)



Der erste Stoff im Bunde ist ein sehr leichter, weich fallender und leicht schimmernder Seidenstoff in Petrol. Es ist kein Satin, aber dennoch hat der Stoff einen leichten Glanz. Die Farbe ist in natura dunkler als auf dem Foto.

The first fabric is a soft draping and slightly shimmering silk in petrol. It's not a satin though it has a slight shine. The color is in real a little bit darker than on the picture.

Patrones 247, Model 4, Vestido Philosophy

Und das habe ich im Sinne. Das Kleid mochte ich vom ersten Blick an, hatte aber nie die Zeit noch den passenden Stoff für dieses Projekt. Ich denke der Stoff passt gut zu dem Schnitt. Und das fertige Kleidungsstück wäre sowohl privat als auch im Büro tragbar.

And this is what i've planned to make from it. I've liked this dress from the first sight and never had the time nor the right fabric to sew it. I think this fabric will work great with this pattern. And it's a style that will perfectly fit into my work wear.

Der nächste Stoff in der Reihe ist ein hellgrauer Seidenchiffon. Ich weiß jetzt schon, dass es keienn Spaß machen wird, diesen Stoff zu verarbeiten so hauchzart ist er. Aber ich hoffe, dass das Endergebnis den Aufwand wert sein wird.

The next fabric is a lightgray silk chiffon. I already know that working with this fabric will be a pita. But i hope that the result will be all worth it.



Patrones 267, Model 38, Vestido Gucci

Und das soll mal daraus werden, wenn er groß ist. Der Schnitt ist aus der guten alten Zeit als in der Patrones noch richtig tolle Schnitte waren.

And this is what i'm going to make. It's one of the great patterns from the good old days of the Patrones magazine.

Ich werde den Schnitt aber abwandeln, um in tragbarer und alltagstauglicher zu machen. D.h. weniger Volumen in den Rüschen und auch etwa knielang

I think i will make this dress less fluffy and more wearable, i.e. less voluminous ruffles and a knee-length.

Um ehrlich zu sein, habe ich mit diesen Stoffen die Katze im Sack gekauft. Die Beschreibung des Verkäufers war nicht gerade aussagekräftig. Mehr als "100%Seide von Gucci in rot" stand da nicht. Als ich das Paket voller freudiger Erwartung aufgerissen habe, war ich zuerst ein wenig enttäuscht. Der Stoff ist nicht rot, sondern burgunder. Jetzt bin ich ganz froh darüber. Die Farbe ist schön und steht mir und schreit nicht nach Aufmerksamkeit, so dass sie auch im Büro angemessen ist. Mit dem richtigen Schnitt kann da ein schönes und tragbares Kleidchen draus werden.

To be honest, i've bought a pig in the poke. The fabrics were described as "100%silk from Gucci in red". When i've ripped of the parcel i was first a little disappointed. It's not red, it's burgundy. But now i'm glad it's a more subtile color. It has a nice color that suits me and it's not a red that is screaming for attention. With the right pattern it will be a great and wearable dress.

Und zu guter Letzt habe ich noch diesen wunderschönen und goldgelben Seidendupion gekauft. Die Farbe ist warm und richtig schön kräftig. Perfekt für ein Sommer-Outfit.

And last but not least, i've bought this beautiful and golden silk dupioni. It has a warm and bright color and will be a perfect summer dress.

Nein, das hier ist keine To-Sew-Liste. Ich wollte Euch nur meine neuen Schätze zeigen und für mich selber vermerken, was ich ursprünglich mal dafür vorgesehen habe.

SWAP 2009: Ich habe fertig! / I did it!

Puuh, am Wochenende war es endlich geschafft! Nachdem mich Bella von Burdastyle so einiges an Nerven gekostet hat, hab ich sie dann endlich bezwungen. Und auch das letzte Teil des SWAPs hat nun seinen wohlverdienten Platz in meinem Kleiderschrank gefunden .... die Schnittmusterbesprechungen und der finale Photo-Shoot werden in den nächsten Tagen nachgereicht.

Pheew, i finally finished my SWAP! I've conquered the Bella pattern from Burdastyle after nerve-wracking changes in fitting and lots of seam ripping. And the last piece from my SWAP has found its way into my closet, too ..... i will post the patternreviews and the pictures of the final photo shoot in the next few days.

Fazit:
Ich kann es ganz offen zugeben: Es liegt mir nicht, nach Plan zu nähen. Ich bin da eher wie ein Fähnchen im Winde: Ich schlage eine Zeitschrift aus oder sehe eine Frau in der U-Bahn neben mir oder entdecke etwas in einem Schaufenster ... und schon entspinnt sich in meinem Kopf das nächste Nähprojekt. Und ausschlaggebend kann da alles sein: ein schöner Kragen an einer Jacke, tolle Knöpfe, einfach irgendetwas woran mein Auge hängen bleibt.

Einerseits war es toll, die notwendige Motivation zu finden, untereinander kombinierbare Kleidungsstücke zu nähen. Andererseits hat der Kampf, sich auch ja an den Plan zu halten, einiges an Selbstdiziplin gekostet und mir auch ein wenig die Freude genommen. Das Ideen aushecken und planen macht - für mich zumindest - doch einen Großteil des Nähspaßes aus.

Alles in allem bin ich stolz auf mich, dass ich es durchgezogen habe, aber auch froh, dass ich mich jetzt wieder voll und ganz dem Lustprinzip hingeben kann!

Conclusion:
I truly can admit: It's hard for me to sew with a plan! When it comes to sewing i flow with the stream: I see something in a magazin or the women next to me in the train wears something nice or i see something while window shopping ... and my train of thoughts starts and my next sewing project is born. Source of inspiration can be everything starting from a nice collar on a jacket, beautiful buttons, just something that catches my eyes.

So on the one hand it was nice to have a motivation to sew a versatile warderobe which gives you the oppurtunity of combinations. On the other hand sticking to a plan demanded a lot of self-discipline and took a little bit of sewing joy. To produce new ideas and making plans what's next is a big part of sewing joy - at least for me.

But alltogether i'm proud that i've made it and i'm also glad that it's done and now i can totally follow the pleasure principle again!
