Columbo lässt grüßen - Part III

In Trippelschritten geht es hier weiter ... und inzwischen ist das Futter fertig:

Und damit es nicht zu langweilig wird, habe ich zwischen Beleg und Futterstoff ein schwarzes Saumband aus Satin mit eingefasst. Das ist ein netter Hingucker und sieht, wie ich finde, sehr edel aus .... und vertuscht zudem, dass Futter und Stoff nicht hundertprozent die gleiche Farbe haben ;-)

And to make things more interesting i added a black bias band between front facing and linning. It's a nice detail and IMO looks very good ..... and hides the fact that fabric and linning are not exactly the same color ;-)

Columbo lässt grüßen - Part II

Trotz des schönen Wetters und sonstiger Ablenkungen, die mit 22 Männern und einem Ball zutun haben ;-) geht es hier Schritt für Schritt voran mit meinem Trenchcoat. Wie immer hatte, ich das Gefühl, dass die Vorarbeiten wie Zuschneiden und mit Vlieseline verstärken nicht enden wollen. Das Vernähen ging dann aber erstaunlich schnell von der Hand ... vermutlich, weil ich den Schnitt schon ein paar Mal genäht habe und keine Änderungen vornehmen musste. Hier ist also der Stand der Dinge:

Despite the nice and summery weather and other distractions, (talking about 22 men and a ball ;-) i'm making progress on my trench, step by step. As always, the preperations like cutting and interfacing took forever. But sewing all pieces went easily ... probably because i made this pattern before and didn't had to fit and change it. So here it is the state of the affairs:

Bis jetzt bin ich super zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis. Was bleibt also noch zu tun:

• Der Trench erhält noch Taschen, einen Gürtel und Gürtelschlaufen
• Und das Futter muss noch zugeschnitten, zusammen- und dann eingenäht werden
• Und zu guter Letzt fehlen dann nur noch die Knöpfe.
  

I'm super happy with the result so far, So, what is left to do:

• i will add pockets, a belt and belt loops
• then i have to cut, sew and attach the linning
• and last but not least i have to add the buttons.
  

Columbo lässt grüßen

Nach ein paar Tagen Auszeit vom Nähen und Bloggen bin ich langsam mal wieder bereit, das nächste Projekt in Angriff zu nehmen. Und entschieden habe ich mich für einen klassischen Trenchcoat in beige á la Columbo. Der gehört wirklich in jeden Kleiderschrank und ist etwas, was ich schon seit Ewigkeiten anpeile. Ich gebe zu, so ein Trench ist nicht gerade das Innovativste ... ABER ... er ist klassisch und zeitlos und geht immer und überall, ob chic zum kleinen Schwarzen oder sportlich mit Sneakern ... und er passt farblich wirklich nahezu zu jeder Farbe (wie meine kleine nachfolgende Auswahl zeigt)!

After a short hiatus i'm ready for a new sewing project. And i decided to make myself a classy trenchcoat in beige à la Columbo. It's a real wardrobe basic and something i want to have FOREVER. I know, it's not really fashion forward ... BUT ... it's classy and timeless and can be worn everywhere and everywhen, dressy with the LBD or sporty with sneakers ... and it works with nearly every color (as my selection below shows)!

Der Stoff ist ein leichter, beschichteter Baumwollstoff in beige. Als Ausgangsbasis werde ich Vogue 8307 benutzen und mit BWOF 09-2006-103 verheiraten. Am Wochenende geht es dann los!

The fabric is a lightweight cotton with a coating in beige. And i will do some frankenpattern. I will use Vogue 8307 and mix it up with BWOF 09-2006-103. I hope i can start at the weekend!

Trench is Trend - Part II

Und weiter geht's mit meinem schwarzen Trenchcoat ..... Am Wochenende habe ich richtig was geschafft bekommen! Und hier ist ein Ausblick auf den momentane Stand der Dinge:

I'm still working on my black trench coat .... I really got a lot done this weekend! So here is the status quo of my coat:

Ich entschuldige mich für diese unscharfen und wenig ansprechenden Fotos, aber das Fotografieren von schwarzen Sachen ist für mich weiterhin ein ungelöstes Mysterium!

I'm sorry for the blurry and not-so-beautiful pictures. Taking nice pictures from black clothes is still an unsolved mystery for me!

Es müssen nur noch die Knopflöcher genäht, Knöpfe angenäht und Ärmel und Mantel per Hand gesäumt werden.

What's left to do is sewing the buttonwholes, attaching the buttons and handstitching the seams.

Alles in allem bin ich super zufrieden mit dem Trench .... bis auf ..... die welligen Nähte. Ich weiß nicht, ob es an einer falschen Fadenspannung liegt oder eine Eigenschaft von diesem Nylon-Material ist, aber nun gut ... Wenn ich den Stoff bügele, sieht es gut aus. Doch nach einiger Zeit ziehen die Nähte sich dann wieder wellig zusammen. Hmhhh ..... vielleicht sollte ich am Saum eine Metallkette wie bei Jacken à la Chanel einnähen. Das Gewicht lässt den Stoff vielleicht schöner hängen. Was meint ihr? Habt ihr das auch schon Mal gehabt und wie habt ihr das Problem gelöst?

All in all, i'm super happy with the result ... except .... the look of the seams. I don't know if my thread tension was too high or if it is a property of this Nylon fabric ..... If i iron the seams they look good, but after some time they tighten and look like that again. Ummhhh ... i was thinking about sewing in a little chain at the seam like it is done in jackets á la Chanel. Maybe the weight of the chain makes the fabric drape more beautiful. What do you think? Do you had seams like that before and how did you solve the problem?

Trench is Trend

Hallo, meine lieben Leser. Ich hoffe, ihr hattet alle ein erholsames und schönes Osterfest!

Happy Easter, my dear readers. I hope you all had relaxing and nice easter holidays!

Ich habe zwischen Eierfärben und Ostereiersuche mit meinem Neffen auch ein wenig Zeit zum Nähen gefunden. Also habe ich mit meinem Trenchcoat begonnen. Da ich mich aber immer noch nicht zwischen den zwei Stoffen entscheiden konnte, habe ich mich für einen dritten entschieden: Einem schwarzen Nylon-Stoff, der schon seit Anbeginn der Zeit in meinem Stoffschrank haust.

Between dying eggs and searching easter eggs with my nephew i found some time to sew. So i've started my trench coat. But since i wasn't able to make a decision between my two fabrics, i've choosen a third one: A black Nylon fabric that is in my stash forever.

Ich habe mich entschieden, den Trench nicht zu füttern. Und damit der Trench auch von innen schön wird, habe ich gleich zwei neue Techniken ausprobiert: Zum Einen Kappnähte (an der Naht von Vorderteil und seitlichem Vorderteil bzw. Rückenteil und seitlichem Rückenteil) ....

I've decided to make the trench unlinned. And to make the trench look good also from the inside i've tried two new finishing techniques: On the one hand, flat felled seams (between front piece and side front piece as well as between back piece and side back piece) ....

und zum Anderen: Hong-Kong-Nähte (an der rückwärtigen Naht sowie an den Seitennähten).

and on the other hand Hong-Kong-Finishing (at the center back seam and the side seams).

Beide Techniken waren ganz leicht und sehen ausgesprochen professionell aus. Es ist doch immer wieder erstaunlich, was für einen Unterschied solche Feinheiten machen!

Both techniques were super easy and look very professional. It's always astonishing what a difference such details make!

Und damit der Trench nicht nur von innen schön aussieht, sondern auch von außen etwas hermacht und nicht langweilig wird, habe ich mich dazu entschieden, Kragen und Belege mit schwarzem Tüll zu verzieren. Das sieht dann so aus:

And in order to make the trench not only look good from the inside but also from the outside as well, i've decided to use some tulle as trim for the yokes and the collar. That's how it looks:

Soweit die Theorie: Das Verzieren mit dem Tüll hat an den Rundungen von vorderem und hinterem Beleg auch super geklappt und gefällt mir wirklich gut .... aber .... hmhhh ... irgendwie weiß ich nicht, wie man das Tüllband um die Ecke legt. Mehrere Versuche am Kragen sind in die Hose gegangen. Sollte ich keinen Geistesblitz haben, werde ich die Kragenform und alle anderen Teile dann wohl so abändern, dass ich keine spitzen Ecken mehr habe.

That's the theory: To trim at the front and back yokes worked out very well since they don't have any sharp edges. I really like how it looks ..... but .... umph ... i really don't know how to apply the trim at the corners for example at the collar. After a lot of try and error, i gave up. Now i'm waiting for a flash of inspiration. Otherwise, i will change the collar form and all other shapes such that there aren't any corners.

Vogue 8307: Stitch me up!

Beschreibung:
Jacke in zwei Längen, gefüttert, mit asymmetrischem Kragen, Wiener Nähten (Princess Seams), Verschlüssen vorne und Schulterpolstern. Ich habe View C in Hüftlänge genäht.

Größen:
6-8-10-12-14-16-18-20. Ich habe Größe 6 genäht.

Sieht das genähte Kleidungsstück wie auf dem Foto bzw. wie die technische Zeichung aus?
Abgesehen von meinen Änderungen, ja.

War die Anleitung leicht zu verstehen?
Ja. Auch wenn es nicht so aussieht, der Schnitt lässt sich erstaunlich leicht nähen.

Was magst Du besonders bzw. überhaupt nicht an dem Schnittmuster?
Oh, das ist einfach: Ich finde den Kragen einfach nur toll. Der absolute Hingucker!

Verwendeter Stoff:
2m Sweatshirtstoff ( innen nicht gerauht, sondern geribbelt).

Änderungen an dem Schnittmuster oder am Design:
Ich habe den Schnitt ja schon für meinen Chocolate Coat verwendet und wußte daher, dass er mir ohne auch nur eine Änderung passen wird.

• Allerdings habe ich View C nicht in Knielänge sondern in Hüftlänge genäht.
• Den Kragen und die Ärmelaufschläge habe ich mit Absteppungen betont. Das war eine ziemliche Arbeit, aber hat sich dennoch gelohnt.
• Da ich nicht durch auffällige Knöpfe von den ganzen Absteppungen ablenken wollte, wird die die Jacke nur durch einzelne Druckknöpfe an jeder Seite geschlossen. (Ich habe auf den Fotos gesehen, dass sich oberhalb der Brust Falten bilden. Daher habe ich die Druckknöpfe noch einmal ein wenig versetzt ... und siehe da ... die Falten sind weg!)
  

Würdest du das Schnittmuster nochmals nähen? Würdest Du es anderen empfehlen?
Ja und ja. Ich mag den Schnitt und die Passform ebenso. Ich denke, ich werde den Schnitt noch einmal nähen (ich denke da an View C als Wintermantel in schwarz) und auch als eine Art Basisschnitt verwenden.

Fazit:
Ich bin total begeistert! Die Jacke ist wirklich super gemütlich, trägt sich wunderbar und sieht auch noch gut aus! Die ganze Abstepperei hat sich echt gelohnt. Ich bin rundum zufrieden!









Pattern Description:
Lined, fitted jacket in two lengths has asymmetrical collar and front closing, princess seams and shoulder pads. I've made View C but in hip-length.

Pattern Sizing:
6-8-10-12-14-16-18-20. I've made size 6.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Yes, except the changes i've made.

Were the instructions easy to follow?
Yes. Even though it looks quite complicated it's surprisingly easy to sew.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
Oh, that's easy: I love the collar!

Fabric Used:
2m sweatshirt terry (no sweatshirt fleece. The fabric has loops inside.)

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made:
I've made it before with some major changes and used this pattern for my Chocolate Coat. So i knew that this pattern fits me right out of the envelope.

• I've made View C in hip-length instead of mid-knee length.
• I've accentuated the collar and the sleeve cuff with topstitching. This was labour-intensive but worth all the work.
• For the closure i've sewed one single snap on each side of the lapel. The topstitching is so eyecatching that i wanted the closures to be decent. (I've seen on the pictures that there are wrinkles at my bust. Therefore, i've reattached the snaps ... and the wrinkles are gone)
  

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
Yes and yes. I love the original design and the fitting as well. I will use the pattern probably again (thinking about View C as a black winter coat) and as some kind of sloper.

Conclusion:
I love it! I love to wear it, love how it looks and am very happy with it! All the topstitching paid off !

Chocolate Coat - Part V

So, endlich bin ich dazu gekommen, euch die lang geschuldeten Fotos von meinem Chocolate Coat nachzuliefern! Der Mantel ist nämlich schon eine Weile fertig und ich habe ihn seitdem jeden Tag getragen .... und ich kann sagen: Ich liebe meinen neuen Mantel!

Finally i've managed to take pictures if my Chocolate Coat. I've finished the coat some time ago ... and since then i've worn it every single day .... i've to admit: I LOVE my new coat!

Als Grundschnitt habe ich Vogue 8307 verwendet. Und ich bin ganz begeistert von der Passform. Der Schnitt ist stark tailliert, was sich sehr gut mit meiner Körperform verträgt. Üblicherweise muss ich bei Burda-Schnitten bis zu 8cm Weite an der Taille herausnehmen. Hier: Null komma nix! Aber einiges habe ich dann doch am Schnitt geändert:

• Ich habe den Mantel weiter ausgestellt und an fast jedem Schnittteil 2-3cm Mehrweite hinzugegeben.
• Vorne und hinten habe ich Passen hinzukonstruiert.
• Ebenso wie einen Kragen.
• Zu guter Letzt habe ich einen Gürtel sowie Gürtelschlaufen hinzugefügt.

I've used Vogue 8307 as the basic pattern and i'm really excited about its good fitting. The pattern is strongly waisted which works pretty well for my body shape. Usually i need to take out about 8cm width at the waist when i'm using a BWOF pattern. I've sewed this right out of the envelope .... not one single change in the fitting. But for the design i've made several changes:

• To make the bottom more flared, i've added about 2cm width at the hem of each pattern piece.
• I've added front and back yokes,
  
• as well as a different collar.
• Last but not least, i've added a belt and belt loops.
  

Mit dem Endergebnis bin ich mehr als zufrieden. Dieses Mal hat wirklich alles gestimmt: Der Schnitt saß von Anfang an wie angegossen, es war einfach traumhaft mit diesem Stoff zu arbeiten und der fertige Mantel entspricht genau meinen Vorstellungen. Ich bin rundum zufrieden und werde in Zukunft wohl öfters in Vogue-Schnitte investieren. Aber macht euch selbst ein Bild:

I'm totally happy with the result. This time everything worked out fine: The coat fitted like a glove, it was a dream to work with this fabric and the finished coat turned out the way i've imagined it. I love my new coat and i will probably invest my money in Vogue patterns more often. Oh, and here are the pictures of my new coat:

Chocolate Coat - Part IV

So, ich habe eine weitere Hürde genommen: Das Futter für meinen Mantel ist fertig und auch schon in den Mantel eingenäht.
So sehr ich es liebe, Jacken und Mantel zu Nähen, so sehr graust es mich immer wieder vor dem Nähen des Futters. Nein, dass muss ich präzisieren: Mich graust es vor dem Einsetzen der Ärmel im Futter. Irgendwie ist das immer so eine Fuddelei und man steckt alles schön fest und dann verzieht es sich doch wieder beim Nähen.
Nun ist es aber geschafft, bleibt noch das Einnähen der Knöpfe und das Säumen per Hand und dann ist es vollbracht!

I've made another step on my way to finish the coat: I've sewed the lining and also attached it to the coat.
As much as i love to sew jackets and coats, as much do i fear sewing the lining. Or more precisely, setting in the sleeves of the lining. It's fiddly and you can use thousands of pins the fabric is moving still. But now i'm done with the lining.
I still need to sew the buttons and handstitch the seam and then it's done!

Chocolate Coat - Part III

Und in Mini-Schritten geht es weiter mit meinem Mantel: Der Kragen ist dran und hier ist schon Mal ein erster Eindruck, wie der Mantel mal aussehen wird.

And i'm still making little progress on my coat: I've added the collar and now you get an impression how the finished coat will look like.


In Wirklichkeit sieht der Mantel vieeel schöner aus. Das Foto ist mit Blitz aufgenommen und nachträglich aufgehellt. Der Stoff hat einen richtig tollen, satten Farbton und eine wunderschöne Textur *schwärm*

The coat looks soooo much better in real. The picture is taken with a flash und i've also used an image processing program to set up the brightness. The color of the fabric is warm and the texture of the fabric is so beautiful *sigh*
Als Ausgangsbasis habe ich den Schnitt Vogue 8307 verwendet mit folgenden Änderungen:

• Ich habe den Kragen selber konstruiert,
• Gürtel und Gürtelschlaufen hinzugefügt und
  
• Patten (diese Schulterklappen ... yoke ..... verflixt, wie heißen die noch einmal im Deutschen?!) vorne und hinten hinzugefügt.
  

Der Schnitt passt unglaublich gut. Ich habe nichts, aber auch wirklich gar nichts an der Passform des Schnittes geändert. Ich bin begeistert. Die hohen Preise der Vogue Schnitte sind - zumindet in diesem Fall - jeden Pfenning wert. Bleibt "nur" noch das Nähen des Futters und verheiraten von Futter und Mantel.

I've used Vogue 8307 as the starting point and made the following changes:

• I've drafted the collar on my own,
• added a belt and belt loops and
  
• constructed front and back yoke.

The fitting of this pattern is awesome, right out of the envelope. I didn't change anything, really. I'm so enthusiastic. The price of a Vogue pattern seems to be worth every Penny - at least in this case. Now i "only" need to sew the lining and attach the lining to the coat.

Chocolate Coat - Part II

Inzwischen habe ich auch erste erkennbare Fortschritte an meinem Mantel gemacht - aber mühsam ernährt sich das Eichhörnchen. Damit es für Euch hier aber nicht langweilig wird, schon mal ein paar Bilder:

Bekanntermaßen wohne ich ja in der tiefsten Provinz .... und da ist man manchmal von der Versorgungskette abgeschnitten ;-) Ich habe einfach kein Zierstichgarn in der passenden Farbe bekommen. Ich hatte also die Wahl zwischen einer nicht passenden Farbe (zu hellem braun oder schwarz) oder normalem Nähgarn (allerdings in der richtigen Farbe) für die Absteppungen. Ich hab mich dann für das normale Nähgarn entschieden und einfach die Fadenspannung ein wenig heruntergesetzt. Das Ergebnis kann sich wirklich sehen lassen. Leider konnte ich das auf den Fotos aber nicht so richtig einfangen.

Der Kragen muss noch zugeschnitten werden, mit Vlieseline verstärkt, zusammengesetzt und an die Jacke angenäht werden. Dann geht es an das Nähen des Futters und zu guter Letzt an das Zusammennähen von Mantel und Futter. Also noch einiges zu tun. Ihr wisst also, wo ihr mich heute findet ;-)

As I mentioned before, i live in provincial backwater ... and this is why i'm sometimes cut off from the supply chain ;-) I couldn't find threat for the topstitching in the right color. So I had the choice between topstitching thread in a wrong color (a lighter brown or black) or normal thread but in the right color. I've choosen normal thread and set down the thread tension. The result really looks good.

So what's left to do: Cut, interface and sew the collar. Sew the lining and sew lining and coat together. A lot to do, so i'm off for sewing!

Chocolate Coat - Part I

Eigentlich hatte ich mir vorgenommen, direkt Freitag nach der Arbeit mit dem Mantel zu beginnen .... aber die Woche war so anstrengend und ich so müde, dass ich mich wie erschlagen auf die Couch habe fallen und vom Fernseher berieseln lassen. Nach einem Erschöpfungsschlaf von 13 Stunden und einem ausgiebigen Frühstück am nächsten morgen konnte es dann endlich losgehen.

Actually, i've planned to start my coat direct after work on friday ... but the last week was so busy and i so exhausted such that i only made it to the couch and watched TV the whole evening. After 13 hours of urgently needed sleep and an extensive breakfast, i was ready to start the coat.

Ich habe nun doch keinen Schnitt komplett selber konstruiert, sondern Vogue 8307 abgeändert. Der Schnitt ist kopiert, alle Änderungen vorgenommen, der Stoff ist zugeschnitten und mit Vlieseline verstärkt. Heute geht es also mit der Näherei los. So, ich bin dann mal weg ... meine Nähmaschine ruft!

I didn't draft the pattern on my own but changed Vogue 8307. The pattern is traced, the pattern pieces copied, all changes are done, the fabric is cut and i've also managed to apply all the interfacing. Now i'm ready to sew .... so that's why i'm gone for today .... my sewing machine is calling me!

Chocolate Coat

Hier in Deutschland steht der Winter vor der Tür. Zeit also, sich zu rüsten und die Garderobe winterfest zu machen. Also steht als nächstes ein Wintermantel an. Den Schnitt werde ich selber konstruieren (ui ui ui, ob das wohl gut geht!?) und den folgenden Stoff habe ich dazu auserkoren:

Winter is coming, at least here in Germany. Time to get ready for cold weather. Therefore, my next project is a winter coat. I will draft the pattern on my own (please keep your fingers crossed, that i wouldn't screw it) and i will use the following fabric:


Der Stoff stammt aus dem Fabrikverkauf von Hugo Boss in Metzingen und ist ein wunderbar schwerer und warmer Wollstoff. Der Stoff ist dunkelbraun wie Zartbitter-Schokolade und hat diagonal zum Fadenlauf gewebte Streifen. Die Oberfläche hat einen leichten Glanz, was den Stoff sehr edel aussehen lässt. Die wunderschönen Perlmutt-Knöpfe stammen ebenfalls aus Metzingen. Sie sind auf dem Foto durch den Blitz viel heller als im Original .... dennoch bin ich unsicher, ob ich nicht doch besser andere Knöpfe wählen sollte (diese Entscheidung hat aber zum Glück noch Zeit). Am Wochenende geht es los! Juhuu!

I've bought this fabric at the Hugo Boss outlet last year. It's a wonderful heavy and warm wool. The color is brown as dark chocolate. It' has diagonal woven stripes and the texture has a slight shine. It really looks very classy and precious. I've also bought the beautiful mother of pearl buttons there. They look brighter on the picture then they're in real ...... i think it's due to the flash of the camera ... though i'm still not sure if i will use them for this coat or not (luckily, i don't have to make this decision yet). I will start it this weekend! Yeah!
